STORAGE@scale Provides Hybrid IT Made to Order

One of the US’s Leading Telecommunications Companies (the customer/telco) was faced with a problem, a storage problem. Their storage costs were exponentially higher than their competition which meant the solutions they could provide to clients were inherently more expensive. With traditional storage systems, they would have to work with whatever outdated hardware the storage vendor chose (due to software development timelines) and thus they could never compete on the cutting edge. They approached CBT for a different methodology… and STORAGE@scale fit the bill.

By utilizing cutting-edge storage software via a software-defined storage (SDS) platform, the customer was able to take full advantage of the latest hardware available. In this case, the customer’s main objective was to find a storage solution that allowed them to provide a competitive price for file-level storage to back-end a potential customer’s VMware environment. The beauty of the STORAGE@scale solution is that it enables each solution to be customized to what’s important to a customer, whether that be cost, speed, functionality, scalability, etc.

By adding an SDS platform via STORAGE@scale to the bid for a Fortune 100 energy company, the telco was able to win the contract. This energy company was so impressed with what the telco provided that they doubled the term of the contract stated in the initial proposal.

CBT’s current Chief Technology Officer, Steve Jordahl, was vital to implementing the solution for the customer, who wouldn’t have won the bid without STORAGE@scale’s unique capabilities. One of the things that Steve points out about the project is that “unlike traditional approaches, our sales process will not just take input and apply a sizing chart. We determine the architecture of the solution based on customer requirements so we can create a better fit with better longevity. Ultimately, we’re a customer advocate.”

One of the fundamental problems with the current IT industry is the partiality to brand name, both on the software and hardware sides. Companies are inherently partial to what they’re familiar with, whether that be HPE, NetApp, VMware, and so on.

Many service/solutions providers have found themselves integrating brand name solutions into their offerings, mainly because of customer familiarity and support. But then they have to compete with the cloud properties who develop their own technologies, which they support on their own, and can offer at much lower price points. STORAGE@scale allows the service/solutions providers the ability to compete at much closer price points while not having to develop and solely support in-house built technology.  And by integrating multiple technologies, the STORAGE@scale solution isn’t a one-trick pony. Each system may ultimately do one thing, but “our solution is positioned to be flexible to meet our customer’s needs,” says Steve.

It’s this software defined flexibility that gives STORAGE@scale the ability to provide tunable file-, block-, and object-based storage in a single SDS platform.
